Everything needs pockets! But sometimes we need a bit of help with sewing them. In this 3 hour masterclass, I will teach you 3 ways of sewing pockets to add interest to garments. Inseam are hidden in the side seam of a garment and can be as big as you want as you can’t see them. Slash pockets are the traditional front jeans pocket, but can have a straight or curved opening. Jet pockets are a more elevated technique but well worth learning as then can be sewn in trousers and jackets. Once you’ve had a practise, you’ll be putting pockets in everything!

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

• Everything is included. You will receive the samples pre-cut ready for you to sew in calico.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

• A sewing machine in good working order, including the metal feet the machine comes with, foot pedal and power cable.

• A general sewing kit to include: fabric scissors, pins, needles, seam ripper, fabric marker, tape measure etc.

WHO IS THIS CLASS SUITABLE FOR?

This class is a beginner plus/intermediate level. You should be comfortable with using a sewing machine and sew following the seam allowance. You’ve probably tackled a few dress making projects at home, but haven’t yet had the confidence to make pockets. Or perhaps you’ve sewn patch pockets a while ago but now would love to tackle some more elevated pocket skills! We will be demonstrating every technique first and then you will have a go.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

Helen Shine is a pattern cutter and seamstress who has worked in the fashion industry in London for 10 years. She has cut patterns for several high-end designer brands, including Victoria Beckham, Mary Katrantzou and Karen Millen. She loves sharing the knowledge she has gained over the years with others, to help them on their sewing journey.

This workshop is held at CAST in Helston.

CAST is a visual arts organisation, based in Helston, Cornwall. Their ambitious programme includes exhibitions of artists’ film, talks, screening events and workshops, as well as learning programmes for schools and creative activities for children, families and young people. CAST also provides studios for artists, an open-access ceramics studio and an excellent Café.
