In this class you will make a pair of culottes using the ‘Ultimate Culottes’ sewing pattern from Sew Over It. These culottes have a simple and flattering shape with wide legged trousers and they are only fitted at the waist so easy for sewing and fitting. They sit on the natural waist and have two finishing options with either a waistband or facing at the waist. They both have single darts at the front and double at the back to add shape, and fasten with an invisible side zip.

TECHNIQUES YOU WILL LEARN

  • Check which size to make

  • How to prepare and lay the fabric

  • How to cut correctly

  • Learn to finish raw edges

  • Learn to finish the waist with a facing or waistband

  • Learn to insert an invisible zip

  • Hemming

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

  • The pattern, which you can take home and use again.

  • Use of all our equipment including Pfaff sewing machines.

  • Tea, coffee and biscuits!

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

  • Fabrics and notions are not included in the price. Feel free to call or email me if you want to check a certain fabric will be suitable once you’ve booked.

  • Matching thread

  • 9” invisible zip in a matching colour to your fabric

  • Interfacing – lightweight

Fabric suggestions:

Light to medium weight woven fabric with lots of drape of your choice. Something like linen, crepe, viscose or rayon would be ideal. If you don’t have much sewing experience, I would strongly suggest buying a stable fabric to sew this in, as a slippery silk will be rather tricky!!

Fabric 45”/115cm wide or wider

Finished with waistband:

  • Size 8-14 = 2.1m

  • Size 16-18 = 2.2m

  • Size 20 = 2.8m

 

Finished with waist facing:

  • Size 8-10 = 2.1m

  • Size 12-14 = 2.3m

  • Size 16-18 = 2.4m

  • Size 20 = 2.5m

Fabric 60”/150cm wide or wider

Finished with waistband:

  • Size 8-16 = 2.1m

  • Size 18-20 = 2.2m

 

Finished with waist facing:

  • Size 8-16 = 2.1m

  • Size 18 = 2.2m

  • Size 20 = 2.5m

It’s a good idea to have pre-washed your fabric so that you know the shrinking is done before you sew a garment. This is especially important for stretch fabrics! Wash the fabric on the temperature you normally wash your clothes, or a bit higher.

WHO IS THIS workshop SUITABLE FOR?

This class is a beginner plus level. You should be comfortable with using a sewing machine and sew following the seam allowance. You’ve probably tackled a few sewing projects at home, but want to improve your dressmaking skills and start to understand dress making patterns.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

Helen Shine is a pattern cutter and seamstress who has worked in the fashion industry in London for 10 years. She has cut patterns for several high-end designer brands, including Victoria Beckham, Mary Katrantzou and Karen Millen. She loves sharing the knowledge she has gained over the years with others, to help them on their sewing journey.
