In this class you will learn how to sew the very popular Nina Lee Carnaby shift dress. This pattern is perfect for playing with colour blocking, using two different colour fabrics of a similar weight, as there is a seam to separate the skirt and bodice. Or if you prefer, you can keep it subtle with a little contrast colour on the inside of the pockets. This dress is finished with a facing at the armhole and neckline, and fastens with an exposed zip at the back neck. Also – IT HAS POCKETS!!

Fabric suggestions:
Medium weight woven fabric of your choice. If you would like to colour block bring options of another woven fabric of similar weight. Fabrics such as cottons, chambray, cotton lawn, crepe, denim, corduroy, linen, jacquard and brocade would be an ideal choice for this dress.
Fabric quantities:
Fabric 45”/115cm wide or wider
Varies from 1.7m – 2.7m, check image at top of page for your size.
Fabric 60”/150cm wide or wider
All sizes = 1.4m
It’s a good idea to have pre-washed your fabric so that you know the shrinking is done before you sew a garment. This is especially important for stretch fabrics! Wash the fabric on the temperature you normally wash your clothes, or a bit higher. If you are buying the fabric on the day of the class, you can use our steam iron to pre-shrink the fabric before cutting.
If you have any questions about how much fabric you’ll need, come into the shop or email us and we’ll be able to assist you.
WHO IS THIS CLASS SUITABLE FOR?
This class is a beginner plus level. You should be comfortable with using a sewing machine and sew following the seam allowance. You’ve probably tackled a few sewing projects at home, but want to improve your dressmaking skills and start to understand dress making patterns.
