TELL ME MORE

The Cleo Pinafore dress remains one of Tilly and the Buttons most popular patterns. It is suitable for Beginner Plus sewists, and has lots of customizable options. You can make it with a classic dungaree style fastening with metal buckles and no sew buttons, or you can use a regular button fastening. It is a great wardrobe staple that you can wear with t-shirts in the summer, and big chunky sweatshirt and tights in the winter. There are two different length options, multiple pocket placement options, and you can even challenge yourself to use a contrasting topstitching thread.

TECHNIQUES YOU WILL LEARN

  • Measuring yourself and selecting the right size pattern

  • How to prepare and lay the fabric

  • How to cut correctly

  • Sewing techniques for heavyweight fabrics

  • Patch pockets

  • Topstitching techniques

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

  • The pattern, which you can take home and use again

  • Use of all our equipment including brand new sewing machines

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

  • Fabrics and notions are not included in the price – there will be a wide selection of gorgeous fabrics to buy at the start of the class from Stitches & Cream. You will receive a discount of 10% on fabrics that you buy for the course.

  • Matching thread

  • 2 x 30-35mm wide dungaree buckles and no sew jeans buttons (we will have these for sale on the day) OR 2 x 15-20mm buttons

  • 0.4m iron on interfacing

  • Optional: Contrasting thicker topstitching thread

Fabric suggestions:

Heavy or medium weight woven fabrics that hold their shape work best for the Cleo. These include denim, corduroy, cotton drill, gabardine, canvas, wool.

Fabric quantities:

Fabric 45”/115cm wide or wider

  • Mini length: 1.8m

  • Knee length: 1.9m

Fabric 60”/150cm wide or wider

  • Mini length: 1.2m

  • Knee length: 1.3m

It’s a good idea to have pre-washed your fabric so that you know the shrinking is done before you sew a garment. Wash the fabric on the temperature you normally wash your clothes, or a bit higher. If you are buying the fabric on the day of the class, you can use our steam iron to pre-shrink the fabric before cutting.

WHO IS THIS CLASS SUITABLE FOR?

Beginner Plus classes are aimed at sewists who know how to use a sewing machine and sew following the seam allowance. You’ve probably tackled a few sewing projects at home, but want to improve your dressmaking skills and start to understand dress making patterns. As there are a lot of steps to making this dress, we can’t guarantee you will finish it in the class.
